Life tosses us back and forth like waves in a storm. One moment we feel steady, and in the next, we fight just to stay afloat. During these seasons, it’s easy to forget our life jacket—our faith—and rely solely on our own strength.
“I am being tossed back and forth by the waves of life.
Having forgotten my life jacket, I fight the current.
But something inside me tells me to stop fighting,
for I have a lifeguard who walks on water.”
When We Try to Fight the Storm Alone
Hard seasons often tempt us to strive harder rather than trust deeper. We wrestle with uncertainty, grief, exhaustion, or fear, believing we can somehow rescue ourselves.
Scripture reminds us why this approach leaves us weary:
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” ~Matthew 11:28 (NIV)~
God never asked us to carry the storm by ourselves.
Faith Means Letting Go of Control
There comes a moment in every storm when the Holy Spirit gently whispers, “stop fighting.” This isn’t surrender to defeat—it’s surrender to God.
In Matthew 14, the disciples were battling wind and waves when Jesus came to them—walking on the water:
“Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. ~Matthew 14:25 (NIV)~
Just like the disciples, we panic when we focus on the storm instead of the Savior. Yet Jesus reaches out before we fall:
“Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.” ~Matthew 14:31 (NIV)~
God Is With You in the Middle of the Storm
Another powerful reminder comes from Mark 4, when the disciples feared for their lives as a violent storm raged:
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.” ~Mark 4:39 (NIV)~
The same Jesus who calmed the sea is present in your storm today. His peace is not dependent on calm circumstances—it flows from His authority.
Choosing Trust Over Fear
When waves rise, faith calls us to remember who is in the boat:
“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you… When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned.” ~Isaiah 43:2 (NIV)~
Sometimes faith isn’t about swimming harder.
Sometimes faith is about trusting the One who holds the sea.
A Word of Encouragement
If life feels overwhelming, pause and breathe. Lay down the struggle. You don’t have to fight every wave alone.
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” ~1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)~
Trust the lifeguard who walks on water. He is near. He is faithful. And He is holding you even now.
