Discovering the Power of God’s Word

Open Bible with light shining from heaven representing the power and guidance of God’s Word.

Many believers learn about God’s Word early on. However, they often don’t grasp its depth or significance until later in life. Sometimes we see it as rules rather than a relationship. Sometimes we only turn to it when life begins to fall apart.

My journey with His Word began that way.

Being Introduced to the Word but Not Understanding It

I was introduced to His Word at an early age, but I did not understand it.

I glanced at it from time to time as I grew older, but it could not hold my attention.

Like many people, I knew the Bible existed and that it was important. Yet I had not developed a relationship with the One who inspired it.

Without that relationship, the words felt distant.

When Sin Makes Us Justify Our Choices

As I began to dance with sin, I picked up His Word to justify my actions, knowing deep down it did not work that way.

Instead of allowing scripture to correct my heart, I tried to make it fit my desires.

His words felt like a list of rules I was not ready to live by.

All I could see was the hurt and pain in my life, and words did not seem powerful enough to heal what I was carrying.

So I chose myself.

There was no one to tell me no.

The truth is, when we are wounded or searching for control, we often resist the very thing that can heal us.

Searching the Word for Understanding

One day, I opened His Word again.

This time, I was searching for understanding.

I did not even believe I would make it to the end.

But something unexpected happened.

Every scripture spoke directly to me. Not with condemnation but with love.

That moment changed everything.

Scripture reminds us in Psalm 119:105 that

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”

God’s Word does not exist to shame us. It exists to guide us.

Discovering God’s Heart Through Scripture

As I continued reading, I began to realize something I had missed before.

God desired my obedience not to restrict me, but to walk with me and to spend eternity with me.

I had been blinded by my own desires and never stopped to consider what God desired for me.

When we begin to see the Bible through the lens of God’s love rather than rules, everything shifts.

His Word becomes life-giving.

Repentance and Returning to God

As I grew in His Word and began to build a relationship with Him, I realized something else.

My hurt and pain had deceived me.

They had convinced me that my way was better.

But God gently showed me that healing begins with repentance.

I knew I had to turn away from sin because I no longer wanted to miss the mark or live separated from Him.

First John 1:9 reminds us that

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

God does not reject a heart that truly turns back to Him.

Hiding God’s Word in Our Hearts

Now, as my walk with Jesus deepens and I immerse myself in His Word, I understand something I once overlooked.

The importance of hiding His Word in my heart.

Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You.

God’s Word strengthens us.

It convicts us.

It guides us.

Most importantly, it draws us closer to Him.

When we keep His Word in our hearts, it becomes a shield against the very things that once led us away from Him.

Final Thoughts

If you have ever struggled to understand the Bible or felt distant from God’s Word, you are not alone.

Many of us begin that way.

When we read Scripture with an open heart, God shows Himself to us through His Word.

What once felt like rules becomes a relationship.

What once felt distant becomes personal.

And what once felt confusing becomes a source of peace, wisdom, and transformation.

God’s Word has the power to change your life if you allow it to.
