Following Jesus When Faith Costs More Than Comfort
Following Jesus is often celebrated when prayers are answered, doors are opened, and blessings overflow. But true discipleship is revealed not in moments of abundance but in seasons of testing.
Jesus never promised His followers an easy path. He spoke openly about persecution, sacrifice, and the cost of taking up our cross daily. Yet many believers find themselves wrestling with a difficult question: Would I still follow Christ if everything I hoped for were taken away?
This poem invites us to examine our hearts and consider the depth of our commitment to Jesus. Is our faith rooted in what He can give us, or is it rooted in who He is? Have we truly counted the cost of discipleship and settled in our hearts that Christ is worth following no matter what we may gain or lose?
As you read, prayerfully reflect on these questions and allow the Holy Spirit to search your heart. For the greatest test of faith is not whether we follow Jesus when life is good, but whether we will remain faithful when all we have left is Him.
As you read, ask yourself: If following Jesus cost me everything, would I still say yes?
Have You Counted the Cost?
Would you continue to follow Jesus when persecution comes back-to-back?
Would you still trust Him when the things you prayed for never come to fruition?
Would you continue to follow Jesus if you never received the house, the car, the spouse, or the child you longed for?
Would you still follow Him when death comes and takes the ones you love, one after another?
Would you continue to follow Jesus if you found yourself homeless for a season?
Would you still follow Him when others mock you and label you a “Jesus freak”?
Would you continue to follow Jesus if following Him cost you friendships, opportunities, or acceptance?
Would you still follow Him if you were called to suffer for His name’s sake?
Would you still follow Him if it meant laying down your own dreams to embrace His will?
Would you continue to follow Jesus if it cost you everything this world has to offer?
What are you willing to give up to follow Christ?
Have you counted the cost of discipleship?
Have you settled in your heart that Jesus is worth it, no matter the price?
For many will follow Him for the blessings,
but few will remain when the trials come.
For many will praise Him when the path is easy,
but will they still praise Him when the road grows difficult?
The true test of faith is not whether you follow Jesus when He gives,
but whether you will follow Him when all you have left is Him.
For when Christ is all you have,
you will discover that Christ is all you need.
