The Light Still Shines

Choosing to Focus on the Light of Christ in a World Filled with Darkness

As I sat this morning reading a story about people helping one another, a question came to mind: Why is so much attention given to the bad in the world while so much good goes unnoticed?

Every day there are stories of kindness, compassion, generosity, and sacrifice taking place around us. There are people feeding the hungry, encouraging the brokenhearted, helping strangers, praying for those in need, and showing love to people they may never meet again. Yet these stories rarely make the headlines. Instead, negativity often dominates our screens, our conversations, and our thoughts.

I am not suggesting that we ignore the realities of the world. Pain exists. Evil exists. Injustice exists. We should never turn a blind eye to the struggles people face. However, when darkness is all we focus on, it can begin to shape our perspective. We can become convinced that there is no good left, that people no longer care, and that hope is fading.

But that simply is not true.

The light of Christ is still shining.

Even in a world filled with chaos, God’s presence can still be seen through the actions of His people. Every act of kindness, every encouraging word, every prayer lifted up on behalf of another person is evidence that Christ is still at work. His light has not been extinguished by darkness.

Jesus said:

“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” — Matthew 5:14 (KJV)

As believers, we have been called to reflect His light wherever we go. We are not called to contribute to the darkness but to illuminate it with the love, grace, and truth of Jesus Christ.

For far too long, many of us have been spoon-fed negativity. Through social media, news outlets, and endless streams of conflict, we are constantly reminded of what is wrong. Over time, this can affect our hearts if we are not careful. We can become cynical, fearful, angry, or discouraged.

This is why it is so important to guard what we allow into our minds and spirits.

Philippians 4:8 reminds us:

“Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report… think on these things.”

God never intended for His children to live consumed by darkness. He calls us to focus on things that inspire faith, hope, and love. That does not mean pretending problems do not exist; it means refusing to allow darkness to become greater than the God who overcomes it.

The world desperately needs people who are willing to shine.

It needs people who will encourage rather than tear down. It needs people who will choose unity over division. It needs people who will show compassion when hatred seems easier. It needs believers who are willing to reflect the heart of Christ in a culture that often promotes the opposite.

Division and hatred can only win when we stop loving one another. They can only prevail when we stop extending grace, stop showing compassion, and stop being the hands and feet of Jesus.

Yet every time we choose kindness, every time we forgive, every time we pray, every time we help someone in need, we push back against the darkness.

John 1:5 declares:

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”

The darkness has never been able to overcome the light of Christ, and it never will.

That is why I will never stop sharing the love of Jesus. I will never stop looking for the good that God is doing in the lives of His people. I will never stop believing that hope still exists, because Christ still reigns.

The world may highlight the darkness, but I choose to highlight the Light.

And my prayer is that as believers, we would continue shining so brightly that others cannot help but see Jesus through us.
