Freedom begins when you stop letting yesterday make today’s decisions.
“Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,” Philippians 3:13 NKJV
The past cannot control your future unless you give it permission.
I can only speak from my own experiences, and for a long time, my past dictated many of my choices. The pain, rejection, disappointment, and wounds I carried became the lens through which I viewed life. Instead of moving toward healing, I allowed those hurts to lead me further into darkness.
When you refuse to face your pain and allow God to heal it, your past has the power to influence your present. It shapes your decisions, your relationships, and even how you see yourself. I know this because I lived it.
I made many poor choices because I held on to unforgiveness. We’ve all heard the saying, “Hurt people hurt people.”While there is truth in that statement, our pain is never an excuse to wound others. I was hurting, but my hurt did not justify the ways I responded. When pain is all you can see, it’s easy to react instead of heal.
Everything began to change when I entered into a genuine relationship with Jesus Christ.
Did all the pain disappear overnight? No.
Healing was a process.
There were layers of hurt, anger, disappointment, and bitterness that I had to surrender to Him one by one. But with every prayer, every tear, and every act of obedience, He was teaching me that I didn’t have to live chained to yesterday.
I reached a point where I was simply tired.
Tired of lashing out.
Tired of carrying anger.
Tired of allowing my past to write the story of my future.
Deep inside, there was a light that longed to be free. That freedom came through forgiveness—not because the people who hurt me deserved it, but because Jesus had already forgiven me. Forgiveness didn’t erase what happened, but it broke the hold my past had on my life.
I’m sure many of us can look back on seasons we’d rather forget. We all have moments that were painful, unfair, or even traumatic. But if we continue holding on to those moments, they can quietly pull us away from the purpose God has for us.
God never intended for your past to become your permanent address.
He is a God of restoration. He redeems broken stories, heals wounded hearts, and gives beauty for ashes. What the enemy meant to keep you bound, God can use as a testimony of His grace.
If you’re struggling to let go of your past today, may I encourage you to ask God for help. Be honest with Him. Tell Him where you’re hurting. Ask Him to reveal any unforgiveness, bitterness, or fear you’ve been carrying. Then allow Him to do what only He can do.
Healing may not happen overnight, but every step of surrender is a step toward freedom.
Don’t let yesterday continue making decisions for tomorrow.
Jesus came so that you could walk in the light—not in the shadow of your past.
Choose healing.
Choose forgiveness.
Choose freedom.
Choose Christ.
Because your past may explain part of your story, but it does not have to determine your future.
“Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert.” Isaiah 43:18-19 NKJV
