The Call

By

There are moments when God calls us into something we don’t feel qualified for. We question why He would choose us, especially when we remember who we used to be.

The Call is a reflection of my own struggle with surrendering to God’s love and accepting the calling He placed on my life. I have wrestled with feeling unworthy, afraid, and uncertain about whether I was equipped for what He was asking me to do.

But I am learning that God doesn’t call us because we are perfect or because we have everything figured out. He calls us, transforms us, and teaches us to trust Him along the way.

This poem is about that journey—from running from the call to finally surrendering to it.

The Call

His love for me
was what I needed
when I didn’t know true love existed.

He was there from the beginning,
but I couldn’t see
how much He gave up just for me.

His love is pure,
without conditions.
How could I not serve
and worship Him?

He is my God Almighty,
and I am thankful for Him.
There would be no me without Him,
so I will forever praise His name
and share all He has done for me.

I was rebellious,
determined to do things my way,
until my encounter with Him.

That is when the change began.

But the change
did not happen overnight.
It took years
for me to realign my steps.

I ran from Him,
even though I knew
He had chosen me.

“How could You choose
a broken girl like me?”
I asked
as I continued to flee.

“Don’t You know how sinful I am
and all the things I have done
in my past?

Surely there is someone
more deserving of You than me.”

How can I accept Your love
when I don’t even know
how to reciprocate it?

I know You are love
because God is love,
but I am afraid.

Afraid that I am not equipped
to help set others free
when all I want to do
is run from the calling
You placed on my life.

You ask me to be honest
with the people You send my way.

But Jesus,
are they ready
for the girl I used to be?

You know all things,
so You know my greatest fear
is letting You down—

especially as I reconcile
who I was
with the new creation
I am becoming in You.

I know what I must do.

I will surrender to Your will
and share Your goodness
for all to hear.

I didn’t choose You.
You chose me.

And that truth
gives me the strength
to move forward.

You are the love I needed,
and now I have it.

My life is a testimony
of Your goodness.

And I love You
because You loved me first.

Sometimes the hardest part of answering God’s call is believing that He could truly choose someone like us. We look at our past, our mistakes, and our shortcomings, and wonder how God could use us.

But God is not asking us to be perfect. He is asking us to surrender.

I am learning that my past does not disqualify me from His purpose. It reminds me of just how far His grace has carried me.

I didn’t choose Him. He chose me.

And I pray that I never stop saying yes.

Excellent encouragement, Char, and you point us to the ultimate source. In the rearview mirror, I now see the instances where those called first rebelled (e.g., Jonah, Moses, Jeremiah, and many more). Thank God that He never gives up on us. I appreciate your candor and inspiration!

Thank you so much, Grant! I’m grateful that God’s Word reminds us that even when we struggle, He never gives up on us. His grace truly meets us right where we are.
